DARE TO DREAM (Reader's Digest, Nov. 2006) Think you messed up your day- or even your life- because you made up a mistake? you just may have taken a critical step towards your goal by: Chris Wood "You pour your heart into something for years, and it dies a horrible death for incredibly stupid reasons. You just want to scream in the wind." (Gosling) Gosling may have met failure at first, but he didn't stop trying. That's not true of many of us, however. Too many people fear failure. Some of us let it keep us from trying new things, telling ourselves we'd be no good at it. Some limit our goals to only what we feel absolutely sure we can accomplish. Failure is a good thing. If everything you try is very successful, it means you're playing it safe; you're not out on the edge. Failure means that you're learning. People experience different things when they fail: It may be humiliation; it may be disappointment. What they don't want to experience is that feeling. On the other hand, a lot of people think they're afraid of failure, but what they're really afraid of is success. They know how to handle failure, because they're probably failed often, but they don't know how success would feel and so they stick with what they know. Embrace failure! Go out and try to fail three times. Failure is not the opposite of success. It's more like an ingredient. |
